I’m a Newbie

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Hello everybody!
A few days ago I was diagnosed with T2D. Several months ago I started
to have numbness in my arm and hands that caused me to get checked by
my doctor. I was kind of surprised and dismayed at the diagnosis.
Actually, I am feeling kind of depressed thinking about having to
change my diet and getting more exercise. Depression has been an issue
for me for at least the past ten years (maybe I’ve been diabetic for a
while and not known about it). I am involved in a depression support
group where we meet in person, but this on-line group is new to me.
Maybe it will be like the online car enthusiast group that I’m a member
of. We share tips and stories of how to care for and repair our cars.
Sometimes the problems are unique to a specific model, so the advice is
valuable.
Make it a great day!
Steve

Hi Everyone

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

Hi Eileen,
The diagnosis of diabetes can be very hard to go through. I was only 9 when
I was diagnosed with type 1, insulin-dependent diabetes, but no matter the
age it is a diagnosis that requires major life changes, many of which are
unpleasant (finger pokes for testing blood sugar, insulin injections, A1c
tests, etc.) or else very challenging (eating healthy, exercising regularly,
etc.). Although it’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed, sad, frightened,
or angry when you learn you have diabetes, it’s also important to put these
emotions aside after a while and learn to manage the condition. Diabetes is
a condition that CAN be managed, and people CAN live a relatively normal
life if they have the right tools and knowledge. The insulins, glucose
meters, and other tools available to diabetics today are vastly improved
over those available even 14 years ago when I was diagnosed.
I am also a full-time student, so I understand how stressful that can be. I
do not think you should have to be a “caregiver” to your mother unless she

New to group….care to share some info?

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

I just found this group and I hope it turns out to be beneficial.
Many of the groups (diabetes) are not active, everyone seems to be
knowledgable and commited to helping others. Here goes…I live in
the Chicago ‘burbs and need a new endo, any suggestions on who/where
to stay away from or lean towards? I realize no one can solicit, I
was hoping for an informed opinion. I also have a ? re: emotional
rebouding after a low BS reaction. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks again and I hope to hear from you soon

intro

Hi, My name is Janet and I live in Virginia. I have had type 2
diabetes for about 20 years. I do not belong to any other diabetes
groups and am interested to see if being on group will be a positive
experience. Already I learned one new idea-about using nutritional
yeast with rice. My BS have not been well controlled for the past
couple of years but I am working on it. I look forward to reading
people’s posts.

Welcome to the list. I’m Jen, one of the moderators. I’ve had type 1
diabetes for 14 years. Want to tell us a bit about yourself? Do you have
diabetes yourself or does a family member or friend?

Chicken and egg….

<< What you are saying is that all diabetics are clinically depressed. I
don’t believe that.
An association (read: correlation) does not mean that all diabetics are
depressed. It means there’s a higher incidence of depression among people
with diabetes, and/or a higher incidence of diabetes among people who are
depressed. It also says absolutely nothing and one causing the other or vice
versa, though it can have an influence.
It makes perfect sense that people with diabetes might have a higher
incidence of depression than the general population. Most people don’t have
to worry about the possibility of passing out due to a severe low, think of
every morsel of food they put in their mouth and every bit of exercise they
do, constantly adjust medication (for those of us with type 1, at least, I
don’t know as much about type 2), or the looming threat of complications
that even those of us who have no signs of still worry about. Even the cost
of medication for those who can’t afford it can be a contributor to causing

Experiments

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Good for you for experimenting, Andrew! I often do the same thing, running
little experiments to figure out how my body reacts to certain things.
Instructions and guidelines in books are really good as a starting place,
but in the end everyone should figure out what works and doesn’t work for
them individually.

BARRING ROBBY AND DAVE

Sunday, July 8th, 2007

Hi John,
The only reason Dave was put on moderated status is because of his numerous
replies to Robby that were cluttering up the list almost as much as Robby’s
messages were (as much as I did agree with their content!). I wanted to
completely stop the insults and flame wars. I do let relevent posts through,
though. He’ll likely be put back on regular status in the next little while.
As for Robby, yes, so far on this list he’s shown up with four different
IDs, hence why he still manages to post every once in a while. Rest assured
as soon as he posts with a new ID he’s banned immediately when I or the
other moderator see it. Hopefully he’ll get bored soon and leave for good.
Unfortunately I think Robby’s managed to scare many people away, as the list
is extremely quiet lately.
Hope everyone in North America had a nice long weekend!

Roll call

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

Hi everyone,
I thought it would be good to get a “roll call” of all the members on the
list, so we could get to know each other a little better. You can introduce
yourself with how long you’ve had diabetes (and what type), and maybe a
little about yourself. I’ll start the ball rolling, even though I introduced
myself not so long ago…
I’m Jen, and I’m currently a 23-year-old college student from Canada. I’ve
had type 1 diabetes since I was 9, and just in the past few months have
really taken control of things (before that I had excellent control as a kid
when my parents did most of the work, but not so good control once I took
over). Once I’m done school I plan on going into teaching, not sure what age
group yet. When I have the time, I enjoy going for walks, reading, writing,
chat rooms and listservs, researching topics of interest online, and
spending time with friends.
I look forward to “meeting” the rest of you on the list. :) (more…)
