Life and crap are both four letter words

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

It was brought to my attention by myself during my daily meditations
that I can’t afford to go on my yearly vacation any more. My medical
bills have skyrocketed this month. It also isn’t much fun on vacation
when you can’t afford to go anywhere and you have nobody to hang out
with.

Frustrated!

Monday, August 27th, 2007

I am very Frustrated right now I have been battling serious health
problems for the past 14 years, and now I have been told that I am
both gluten intolerant and diabetic. Is there any one out there that
can help me find some good things to eat and snack on. I do a lot of
computer work and I like to nibble while Im typing. But I cant find
any thing to snack on that wont bring my sugar up. The doctors just
put me back on predinsone ant that is messing with my sugar too. Help!

I’m a Newbie

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Hello everybody!
A few days ago I was diagnosed with T2D. Several months ago I started
to have numbness in my arm and hands that caused me to get checked by
my doctor. I was kind of surprised and dismayed at the diagnosis.
Actually, I am feeling kind of depressed thinking about having to
change my diet and getting more exercise. Depression has been an issue
for me for at least the past ten years (maybe I’ve been diabetic for a
while and not known about it). I am involved in a depression support
group where we meet in person, but this on-line group is new to me.
Maybe it will be like the online car enthusiast group that I’m a member
of. We share tips and stories of how to care for and repair our cars.
Sometimes the problems are unique to a specific model, so the advice is
valuable.
Make it a great day!
Steve

Hi, I’m new

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

Hello,
I just found this list.
I am 32 years old, and was diagnosed a type I diabetic at the age of
20. I know that is quite late in life, so I feel quite fortunate
that I did not have to deal with diabetes through my childhood and
teen years.
I am currently a mother of 2 healthy boys aged 6 and 3(it was a huge
relief to find out diabetics can have safe and healthy pregnancies!)
and I work part-time selling home and auto insurance.
I live in Canada, so the measurements we use for bloodsugar are a
bit different than most of what I’ve seen posted. To give you a
comparison, I was told a healthy blood sugar range is 4.0 to 8.0 and
most healthy people I’ve checked (lots of friends and family were
curious about my meter when I was first diagnosed) were around 5.5-
6.0.

Step-Son

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

My Step-Son is 10yrs old. He was diagnoised w/type1 at age5. I came
into the picture 2years ago. Just recently we have started having
severe behavioral problems with him. He has know been diagnosed with
ADHA too. Just recently he has became very shy, keep to himself, says
he has no friends and the ones that claim to be his friends make fun of
him when adults are not around. I know this has to be difficult, but
he has now turned on me too. I can do nothing right, but he knows he
can depend on me for insulin ect. Is this normal??
Thanks
Tina

Hello :)

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Hello list! I am Sarah, married to Pat who was diagnosed as a type 2 2
years ago, but has recently been rediagnosed… or rather the new
doctor says he doesn’t know what is going on! Kind of scary.
I joined because this whole thing has just been insane and I don’t know
what to expect. The first question I have is do any of you have
emotional issues connected with your blood sugar levels. Things like
being emotionally detached and not being able to made decisions, or
even not feeling like you love your family anymore?
The second question I have is can you have low blood sugar symptoms
even when your blood sugar is in the 120 to 150 range if your avarage
has been around 250 for several months?
I hope these are appropriate questions for this list, and I look
forward to getting to know other people dealing with this challange.
In service,
Sarah

A Nod of Acceptance

From Diabetes Self-Management blog
A Nod of Acceptance
Joe Nelson
Giving someone a nod when we see them is often a means of recognizing
their presence. It’s not like stopping full-out and saying “How are
you?” which can lead to a longer conversation, but it is a
recognition of another person and an acceptance of their presence.
When I started working with people who had diabetes, the catchphrases
seemed to be “They haven’t accepted their diabetes” or “I guess I
haven’t accepted my diabetes.” Sometimes this meant that a person’s
diabetes was out of control due to some poor choices, and sometimes
it meant that he simply wasn’t paying attention to it. But everyone
was looking for a simple explanation for why they were having trouble
with diabetes control, and it was chalked up to acceptance.
My impression of acceptance used to be that it was some type of “open-

When Therapy Doesn’t Help

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

From Diabetes Self-Management blog
When Therapy Doesn’t Help
Joe Nelson
Diabetes is a condition that can make people feel like they have done
something wrong even when they haven’t. The unpredictable
fluctuations and frustrations that come with diabetes, even when you
behave the way health-care professionals have suggested, can make you
think that you messed up. For instance, when someone like me suggests
that if you go to therapy you will feel better, and you follow my
advice, you expect that you will feel better. However, sometimes that
isn’t the outcome. So what might interfere with effective therapy,
and who is at fault?
This is a complex question, and all of the people involved likely
share some of the responsibility.
First, you must ask yourself the following questions: Why are you
