Insulin pump clip idea/help needed

Saturday, March 31st, 2007

I have been a type-1 diabetic since 1978 and have been using
Disetronic insulin pumps since 1996. I have joined this group to ask
for other Disetronic pump users’ help.
I contacted Disetronic a couple of years ago and asked them to
consider adding dye to the clips they use to clip off your site when
bathing or swimming. Because the clips are a very neutral color and
relatively small, they disappear on me all the time. I lose them in
the bathroom, they get kicked under my bed, etc. Like contact lenses
that now come in colors, they would be much easier to find on the
floor if they had some tint to them.
My husband is an engineer, and he checked out the cost of the dye.
The cost is so minimal it probably wouldn’t affect the cost of the
supplies at all. The people I spoke with at Disetronic thought it
was a ‘great idea’ and said they would pass it along to the ‘powers
that be.’ I never heard anything after that.

Humor; Somewhat off-topic; from the InterNet

Friday, March 30th, 2007

For those of you who watch what you eat, here’s the final word on nutrition
and health. It’s a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting
medical studies:
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the
Americans, British or Canadians.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than
the Americans, British or Canadians.
3. The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks
than the Americans, British or Canadians.
4. The Italians drink large amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart
attacks than the Americans, British or Canadians.
5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and
suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans, British or Canadians.
6. Ukrainians drink a lot of vodka, eat a lot of perogies, cabbage rolls and
suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans, British or Canadians.

My Left Foot

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Yesterday it started to hurt, to the point where standing and walking were
difficult; oddly enough, pedaling my bike hurt, but not nearly as much. I went
to the doctor. She told me that I had either Achilles Tendinitis or a stress
fracture in my ankle (X-ray to find out which.) She’s put me on a course of
antiinflamatories, oral steroids, and pain killers, and warned me that these
might mess up my BS. (Fortunately, they’ve been rather low; 87 this morning.)
This with trying to pack to move, and Easter coming up. AAARAUGH!

U.S., British / U.S. British Glucose Reading Conversion Scale

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Hiya People!
My name is Dev and I haven’t been to this posting board in well over
a year. I came down with Diabetes II 3 or so years ago and found
these posting boards very helpful at that time. I’ve been able to
loose about 60 pounds and modify my diet so that I’ve read “non-
diabetic” on all my quaterly Hb1ac tests. I still have to take
glucophage, but have been able to decrease my daily doseage by
1/3d. I hope eventually (with no set time limit) to be able to
control it by diet alone.
I’ve run across a situation where I need a U.S., British/British,
U.S. Glucose Reading Conversion Scale. I occasionally run across
Diabetics in the UK and we have no common frame of reference. I’m
sure such a scale must exist, but I have no idea where to find it.
Any ideas?

The Popcorn Torture

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

There is a lady I work with; she is a wonderful person in many ways, but she
loves her popcorn. When she puts a bag through the microwave and eats it at her
desk the smell permeats the place. And as popcorn is one of the things which I
a) love but b) am not allowed to have any more, it is unpleasantly close to
torture. I don’t begrudge her the pleasure, but still. Just had to vent a
little. Thanks.

Clever Product

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

I would make this a private e-mail to the person who had a very small kitchen
(with no stove!) and wanted to have suggestions for countertop cooking
appliances; however, I don’t remember her name or e-addy.
Dr. Leonard’s had a three-in-one appliance center; in one fairly compact device
there is combined a toster oven, a 4-cup drip coffee maker, and a small griddle.
The whole thing is 17×11x11 (inches). The cost is around $40.00.
Go to www.drleonards.com, choose ‘order from catalog’, then enter key number
13373012, then product number 11597.

E=C+F+P; simple algebra and elementary logic

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Let E stand for the amount of energy the body needs;
let C, F, and P stand for (respectively) carbohydrates, fats, and protein;
E=C+F+P;
If E remains constant or increases, and C decreases, then either F or P or both
F & P must increase.
Algebra wasn’t my best subject in school, but I do remember this much.
Hence, if we lower our carbohydrate intake, we must increase our intake of fats
and/or proteins. By how must the former is decreased and by how much the latter
is/are increased will vary from person to person, of course, but the principle
endures. As the header says, simple algebra and elementary logic tell us this.

hopefully not rhetorical questions…..

Hi,
Diabetes is accepted as a deadly disease.
Why are there few resources for its emotional aspects?
How do I reduce the overwhelming feelings of all the things that I need to
do because of diabetes?
Why is diabetes used as a motivator (threat?) for changing lifestyle?
“Diabetes epidemic” has in the news over the last few years. Is it a
coincidence that diagnosis has gone from a blood sugar of 149 mg/dl TO 126
mg/dl during the same period of time?
Why are the dynamics of having diabetes or alcohol in the family so similar?
Is it reasonable for blood test meter advertisements to show readings that
are always in the “non diabetes” range?
What do you say to a person who asks how to get a relative to take care of
their diabetes?
(….the relative with diabetes is a doctor specializing in diabetes and

DMV-state

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

I am sorry that I didn’t post what state I live in. I am in
California. Even the lady that was helping me with all this at my
local DMV office was surprised that my license was suspened.

[STUMPERS-L] Fw: [diabetes_int] Re: Driver’s license and diabete

Well there are other things that doctors are mandated to report on public
health and safety grounds, despite confidentiality rules.
Many people think that we diabetics are prone to pass out or become
disorientated at the drop of a hat; this is not true for all of us. Those
of us whose condition is even moderately well-controlled are no more liable
to these problems than people are generally.
