We need help
Where can I go to find legal rights for kids with
Type 1 Diabetes attending school. We have a very
serious condition at her school now and we need help
fast. The Diabetes Educator will not be able to get to
the school until the 25th and the nurse that was
working at the school has just quit for some reason
unknown to anyone and they have hired a medical assistant
that thinks she knows it all about Diabetes and has
not been working with my Daughter to learn how to
deal with my grand-daughter. All injections and finger
sticks are done by the family so far…Please help us to
find the legal help we need to get the proper care for
her while she is in school. The nurse aide told my
daughter that she does not approve of the way we have been
taught to do the shots or anything else that we have
been trained to do in caring for my grand-daughter. So
if anyone has any information that could help us
please contact me at lcooling@… . We live south
of the Dallas Fort Worth Texas area if that helps
any…<br

My daughter was told of this also on Wednesday.
The Diabetes Educator will be at the school on the
25th so I believe that it will be done at that
time…at least I sure hope so. These tiny little children
can’t take care of theirselves and are at the mercy of
total strangers in schools. There has to be something
that we can do to protect them and prevent untrained
people from causing any harm to come to them. As
unfortunate as it is for us to have this happen in our family
I fear it is happening far too many times without
being reported. One mistake with an insulin injection
is one mistake too many and somehow it has got to be
stopped before it happens to anyone. As we all know an
untrained person can harm a diabetic child’s body beyond
repair.<br
forwarding to us. Thank you so much for helping.

Betty, <br
chapter of the ADA? They might have resources to help
you.<br
help? Perhaps provide a letter of
instructions?<br
overstepping her bounds, as it sounds, try contacting the
school administration with your concerns. Another avenue
might be to contact the licensing or certifying board
that handles medical assistants/aides, if there is
one.<br

Hi Betty,<br
links area of this club? There might be a sight there
that might help you find the information that you
need. You’ve probably tried calling the American
Diabetes Association and Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, but
if you haven’t, maybe they can lead you in the right
direction. At the moment I’m not sure what is the correct
number to the ADA, I seem to remember it being 1 800
DIABETES.<br

I just wanted to let everyone know that since the Principle continued
to discriminate against my grand-daughter because of her having
Diabetes, she is now on leave and being investigated about this and
other complaints filed against her by other parents. Thank you all
for replying to my message and remember that there is hope out there
and to fight for what is right. It may take a while but in the end
you will win.
Again thanks to all who answered me on this issue.
