dj<br
calculate your insulin requirement its wt times a number i
can't remember deos anybody here know??? it basically
gives a rough guide to your requirement which should be
devided throughout the day.<br
your family think a large dose is not right, if the
amount controls then its ok big dose or small dose
deosn't make your diabetes better or worse 2units or 20
units its still an insulin dose to rectify a problem.
tell them not to focus on numbers.

hey, i agree totally with jenny and thom... you
have to use what works for you. If 50 units twice a
day keeps your numbers that good, then ytou should
stick with it. The amount of insulin you use depends on
SO many different factors, and like thom said, it
may change over time. Whatever happens to it though,
you should tell your family that unless they have
MD's after their names, they really have no idea what
theyre talking about...not to be rude, i know the
concern is out of love, but you need to remind them that
the true measure of how healthy you are is found in
your blood glucose numbers, not in your insulin units.
However, if you find yourself eating to "catch up" with
the insulin youre taking, or stuffing yourself when
you arent really hungry, or want to go on a diet,
<!--more-->
then maybe you should talk to your doctor. Its all
about what makes YOU feel healthy and balanced... they
dont have to live with your body, you do. well, thats
my 2 cents, good luck trying to convince them =)
~m<br
checking your blood sugar? i know that when i was on shots
(im on the pump now) my blood sugar was always good
when i tested it those 4 times a day, but when i
started testing more frequently to go on the pump, i
found out that my blood sugar was much higher and lower
than it should have been "in between" meals. Just a
thought... if you get curious and can stand the extra finger
prick, you might wanna see where youre at between meals,
or maybe (cringe) at 2 AM or so (i know, terrible
thought) Another good way of seeing how well youre
actually doing it the HbA1c test your endocrinologist (or
regular doctor) does at your visits. this tells you how
your average is over a 3 month period, and it
therefore takes into account the blood sugars you may not
be seeing. Hope this helps! =)

You need to take the amount of insulin that works
for you. This will change over time and for different
situations. When your family learns more they will realize
that BG control is the major concern, not the amount
of insulin it takes to maintain it.<br
experience I could never get good control with just 2
injections a day. I eventually went to 4 or 5 and finally
graduated to a pump. My daily intake varies from 70 to 120
units, and I check my BG's 5-6 times a day. <br
this info is helpful good luck
