Scared..
For a while now I have suspected that I might
have diabetes. I am a 36 yo male. Most symptons check
out(thirst, urination, overweight, etc) But (call me a wuss)
I am terrified to find out. Visions of amputation
and blindness scare me to no end. I am making an
appointment with a doctor tomorrow to try and set up some lab
work and tests. Any words of encouragement? TYIA

I understand why you are scared. Been a diabetic
since age 1 does not make it any easier for me. I too
worry about the complications. However, it is best for
you to know if you are diabetic or not. It will be to
your advantage so if you are diabetic, you can begin
now to understand what changes will come your way.
And remember to take it one day at a time.
<br
this disease. It is definetly better now than 25 years
ago. I remember having to check blood glucose levels
using urine samples on a little test tube and
dropplets. Augh!!!<br
knowledge will be your most powerful ally. It brings less
uncertainty for you.<br
hope for you that it will not be diabetes but a
wake-up call for change.

TYIA- pick up the phone and make an appointment
to see a good dr. You need to confirm that you are
diabetic. There are far worse things. Some of us have lived
for many years- like over 50 with diabetes. <br
not taking care of your diabetes you are asking for
problems in the years to come and you have got a lot of
years to live yet. <br
better than it was some years ago. <br
you may be able to get by with diet, exercise and
pills. <br
place to get info, complain, whine and find people in
similar situations. <br

Thanx for your reply. I made an appointment for this friday. What kind of tests
can I expect? Should I fast before hand?<br

Just think of it this way, your visions of
amputation and blindness would come true if you don’t see a
doctor and get treatment. Diabetes is a controllable
disease and you will be just fine if you take care of
yourself. It gets emotionally hard and that is why there
are clubs like this. Come let out your stress here
and people will know exactly how you feel. I hope
your doctor appointment went okay. I will be thinking
of you.

They’ll probably do blood and urine tests. It is
better if you fast before the blood work. My first blood
test when I was diagnosed was 710 and when I was
fasting it was 350. If I had a fasting 710 blood sugar, I
probably would’ve had to go to the hospital I think.
<br
to talk to anyone. If you are diagnosed with
diabetes, there are classes, support groups, internet
discussions, etc to help you out. Be sure to do the classes.
They helped me a lot. You should also meet with a
nutritionist and work out an eating plan with him/her.

Thank you. I am nervous and still a little scared at the outome. But not as much
as before I joined this club. How soon can I find out the results. Or does it
vary?

I think my lab work took maybe 3-4 days for the
results. But they can check your blood sugar and it will
just take about 45 seconds to see those
results.<br
have to go on medication. Somtimes with type 2 it can
be controlled with just diet and exercise. Don’t get
scared if you have to take insulin though. I was VERY
scared at first. I almost fainted at the sight of a
needle but the first time I gave myself a shot, I said
“Oh.. that wasn’t bad AT ALL!”

Hi Foundry37,<br
doctor, good to see that you’ve made an appointment.
Please, keep us updated.<br
doctor look into what might be happening, the sooner you
find out the faster you can get proper
treatment.<br
scare you, but if you do have diabetes and you start to
take care of yourself as soon as possible, you will
most likely never have to worry about diabetes
complications. I hope this is of some comfort to you. Take
care.<br

having diabetes may feel like the end of the
world but its really not and its 10 times worse to live
with untreated diabetes, than to find out and work to
be in control, we are all in the same boat and are
here to help if need be. good luck and all our
thoughts are with you. Deb C

I’m so happy for you! It is a good idea to watch what you eat and exercise.
Are you feeling any better physically? What do they think was wrong?
